Laertes
Laertes
king of Ithaca, father of Odysseus, Gk., lit. "gatherer of the people," from laos "people" + eirein "to fasten together."
Laertes, the son of Arcesius, was the king of Ithaca and the father of Odysseus. According to some accounts, he was one of the Argonauts, and participated in the hunting of the Calydonian boar. Near the end of his life, he was rejuvenated by Athena in order to take part in one final battle; he fought at his son's side against the relatives of the suitors who had been killed by Odysseus after they tried to usurp his kingdom and his wife.
There's a whole genus(?) of butterflies named after Laertes here

Speaker Placement & More Muse
Hello Athena, Odysseus, and Crew,
There is currently a sound speaker atop on the grid that I'm going to call the Heaven speaker because I plan to use it for any sounds from the heavens including Mount Olympus. Currently, it's a bit subtle but still very useful. Just a heads up for lights, the speaker doesn't take up too much space and it's already over the grid bar.
Also some more music to represent the various locations. These are foundational:
Egypt, Pharos (Menelaus's flashback) - from Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar. It's a music that presents peril but it is not as strong unless taken as a whole journey. Since the whole journey isn't presented in Menelaus's vision, it won't overpower the ultimate storyline but still have a tension and magical element through its exotic Eastern music structure along with Glass's highly heartstring-pulling strings section. Check out (1:20) in the video: That moment in particular I find to be the moment when Proteus is introduced attacking Young Menelaus.
Phaecia (introduction of Nausicaa & Alcinous) - unknown artist. Steel drums, the Caribbean Islands! Phaecia is the land where Odysseus is welcomed in and treated hospitably as a guest. This relates to Alcinous choosing Be Our Guest as his theme song because he is so welcoming to Odysseus.
The Underworld - from Nobuo Uematsu. The first beats of the song I'd definitely like to use and maybe the ominous strings, piano is a potential candidate as well but I don't feel as strongly using it. It's supposed to evoke a feeling of fear but at the same time, I don't want to completely antagonize the Underworld. At this point, I think the Underworld is a time to visit the ancestors and the dead. Elephenor must be paid respect.
Visiting Elephenor and Teiresias - from Christophe Heral in Beyond Good and Evil. The piano is a bit spooky especially amplified a bit with a hollow wind sound behind it and some longing echo effects. The repeating melody gives some hope but the prophecy is not perfect.
Miscellaneous Inspirations - Hoping for Recorders!
Phemios and Demodocus's songs (bittersweet)
A Window to the Past - from Harry Potter 3, John Williams. An example of a modern fantastical piece with the emotion of longing played with a recorder lead. Possible inspiration for their songs. Both of their songs involve the praising of Odysseus which is utter glory for him, however in the contexts of a more immediate relation, Penelope and Odysseus cannot celebrate just yet.
Taverns - from World of Warcraft, multiple composers, a fun uppity tune. Brings to mind a the label of Celtic music, mainly the first Tavern piece (there are three different tavern pieces in the link). This sounds very good on recorder as well. Hoping to have actors play a piece similar to this and of the previous.
Shauni - from Beyond Good and Evil, Christophe Heral. Again, a song with mourning with a very touching woodwind lead.
Ambient Sound Notes -
1) I'm trying to find good sand sounds. Might have to record some myself with rice or real sand or both! Interestingly with water / ocean / the medium Odysseus uses to travel, water and sand has very similar sounds with oodles of particles dropping on top of one another from gravity. By the way, did you know there's sand that squeaks when you walk on it? (Search singing sand) (We also have the very nice rainmaker concealed like a drum that Jocelyn found in the props shop but it's particles are too large to represent sand)
2) Cyclopes footsteps. The beginning beats in the Nobuo Uematsu link I mentioned with the Underworld could be used as the Cyclopes footsteps. Each step creates a small earthquake (sound) that rattles the cave (we could portray this using sand)
A man sails the seas. Strong urge to use this music. Can this be our finishing credits song?! I mean curtain call?!!? He's a pirate!
Using an acoustic guitar to play it has a very nice timbre appropriate to Ancient Greek Music. The video also has a very interesting (woodwind?) instrument. Very much trying to imitate the aulos of olden day. Might very be a replicate.
